Not every dark or flickering screen needs a new panel. Here is how to tell what is wrong, what the repair involves and what decides the cost.
Before You Pay for a Screen
The two-minute screen test
A laptop screen problem has three possible sources: the panel itself, the thin cable that runs through the hinge, or the graphics hardware on the board. Telling them apart is the first step of any laptop screen repair, and you can do most of it yourself.
Plug in an external screen
Connect a TV or monitor by HDMI. If the picture appears there, the laptop works and the fault is in the panel or its cable.
Shine a torch on the screen
If you can faintly see the desktop under a torch, the panel is fine and its backlight has failed.
Move the lid slowly
Flicker or lines that change as the lid moves point to a worn display cable at the hinge.
Look for cracks and ink
Black blots or spreading colour after a drop mean the panel is damaged and must be replaced.

Resolution, touch, OLED and high refresh rate gaming panels all cost more than a standard full HD screen.
Your exact model
Common business models have panels that are easy to find. Newer or less common models can take longer to source.
How it is built
Some screens clip into a bezel. On many thin laptops and on MacBooks the glass is bonded, so the whole display assembly is replaced.
Extra damage
A drop that cracks the screen can also bend the lid, break a hinge or damage the cable, which adds parts to the repair.

Why MacBook screens are different
On most recent MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models the glass, panel and lid come as one sealed display assembly, so a cracked MacBook screen is replaced as a complete unit rather than as a single panel. The repair itself is quick once the part is in hand. Faults such as a dim screen or a flickering cable are still worth checking first, because they do not always need a full assembly.
How long a screen repair takes depends mostly on the part. Panels for common models are found quickly; less common or newer ones take longer. Can a cracked laptop screen be repaired without replacing it?
No. Once the panel is cracked or shows black blots, the liquid crystal layer is damaged and the panel has to be replaced. Screen protectors and glue do not fix it.
Is it worth replacing a laptop screen?
Usually yes, if the rest of the laptop works well and is fast enough for you. If the drop also damaged the board or hinges, or the laptop was already slow, a replacement laptop may be better value.
Will I lose my data if the screen is replaced?
No. A screen repair does not touch the drive, so your files stay where they are. It is still wise to keep a backup.
